In Madhat Kakei's work (born in 1954 in Iraq), reality and abstraction meet. He uses thick layers of colour that are applied beyond the limit of the canvas, testifying to the process of elaboration and creating a third dimension. The paint applied with a knife make it possible to discover the lower layers on the surface, creating both depth and transparency in the work. We are confronted with sculpture-paintings.
Whether you contemplate small size, "intimate" paintings – or big dimensions, strong or dark hues, there are glance slides over reflections of light, traces... a world of substance and colours.
Madhat Kakei does not reject the image or aspire to the impersonal, he wishes to express something fundamental on human life, on his outer and inner landscapes, where meet the material and immaterial, the darkness of the earth and the luminosity of the sky.
The Galerie Maria Lund has welcomed 2 solo shows of the artist, in 2005 and 2007. In the last 20 years, he has regularly exhibited in Japan and in the Nordic countries (in 2006, a retrospective exhibition of his works was shown in The Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm).
